Although Victorian attitudes about a woman's place in society prevented them from pursuing an education, an interest in plants was a pastime that was socially acceptable and could provide an income. Many women used their skills in drawing and painting to enter the realm of science and made meaningful contributions to the emerging field of botany by writing and illustrating books.
